Tottenham Prepare For Cristian Romero Sale With £50m Price Tag Set Amid European Interest

Tottenham are preparing for another significant defensive overhaul as their summer rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi continues to take shape.

Spurs have already moved to strengthen at centre-back, but the next major decision could involve allowing club captain Cristian Romero to leave.

According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham hope to receive around £50m for the Argentina international if an acceptable offer arrives this summer.

There is an acceptance within the club that they may ultimately settle for a package closer to £40m, largely due to concerns over Romero’s injury record.

Inter Milan have already made an enquiry, while Real Madrid and Barcelona have discussed the defender internally as potential targets.

Atletico Madrid have also followed Romero for several years and remain attentive to his situation as the transfer window develops.

Barcelona may currently represent his preferred destination, with talkSPORT reporting that the 28-year-old wants a fresh challenge and would favour a move to the Spanish champions.

No formal offer has yet been submitted by any club, meaning Tottenham retain full control of the situation for now.

Spurs have already taken steps to prepare for a possible exit by signing Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi this summer.

Van Hecke arrived from Brighton in a deal reportedly worth £52m, while Senesi joined on a free transfer following the expiry of his Bournemouth contract.

Fresh talks are also being prepared with Micky van de Ven, demonstrating that Tottenham want the Dutchman to become a central figure in De Zerbi’s defensive plans.

Losing Romero would remove leadership, aggression, and top-level experience from the back line, making those new additions all the more important to the club’s long-term structure.

With several wealthy European clubs now involved, Tottenham find themselves negotiating from a position of genuine strength rather than desperation.

A sale at £40m would feel underwhelming for a World Cup winner still very much in his prime, and the club should push to secure closer to their £50m valuation.

If Romero does leave, the priority must be ensuring the funds are reinvested carefully and that Van de Ven’s long-term future at the club is secured before the window closes.
