There are a host of stars in the mix heading into the third round of the 2026 Open at Royal Birkdale, but all eyes will be on one of them: Bryson DeChambeau.
DeChambeau fired a stellar four-under 66 in Round 2 to charge into solo second place, one shot behind leader Lucas Herbert. But following an intense debate with rules officials after his round, DeChambeau was assessed to a two-shot penalty for improving his lie on the 5th hole.
That turned his 66 into a 68 and dropped him to five under and three shots off the lead. Later Friday night, DeChambeau’s agent said the two-time U.S. Open champion was threatening to withdraw from the tournament over the controversial penatly, despite being fimrly in contention.
Bryson aside, plenty of other stars are in the hunt at the halfway point, including Cameron Young (six under), Scottie Scheffler (four under), Tommy Fleetwood (four under) and Jon Rahm (four under).
