Aston Villa star has been tipped to have made a big step after his performance against Norway.
Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers appears to have lost his place in England’s starting XI to his rival, Jude Bellingham. The Real Madrid man has been in peak form, having scored four goals in the last two games of the knockout stage.
However, England manager Thomas Tuchel reserved special praise for Rogers too. He was brought on in the 89th minute to replace his Villa teammate, Ezri Konsa, and managed to produce a fine performance in the clash versus Norway at the round of 8.
In fact, he contributed to the second goal. His long-range shot from outside the penalty area led to a poor attempt by Norway shot-stopper Orjan Nyland to gather the ball, allowing Bellingham to strike it into the back of the net.
Tuchel shared his thoughts on Rogers’ impressive performance as a substitute in a new role, as reported by Birmingham Mail.
“He made a big step forward today, like all of our substitutes, and especially for Morgan in a new position, this was absolutely top.”
Rogers was deployed in an unusual position, perhaps for the first time in his professional career. He had never even played in this role for the Lions. Tuchel explained his role against Norway after their extra-time victory.
“We used Reece James as a right defender and put Elliot Anderson back as the six and played with Morgan Rogers as the eight and defensively as a double six.
“I think Morgan has had a difficult time not playing in the role that he wants and that he can play. He is one of my key players and I am so, so happy about his performance today.”
Such a decision definitely surprised the fans. Luckily, it worked very well, even though it was a bit of a gamble by the German boss.
Throughout the game, Rogers performed quite well in his new role. Apart from his accurate shot that led to England’s winning goal, he completed 13 passes, recorded two unstoppable touches, and made one clearance.
The 23-year-old midfielder could be deployed in that position again when necessary, or perhaps even in another unexpected role, as an element of surprise against future opponents. One thing is certain: his performance in Miami Gardens on that day could become a new tactical reference for Unai Emery next season, should he stay in Villa Park.
In the next match against Argentina, Rogers is likely to start on the bench again. Yet, should he be able to deliver the same or an even more impactful performance, there is always a possibility that he could start in the final. Playing alongside Bellingham, either as a number 10 or once again as a number 8, is now more than possible, especially following the fitness concerns surrounding Declan Rice. England have reportedly been hoping for his speedy recovery.
