Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is gathering pace this summer, with Chelsea’s Andrey Santos emerging as a serious target for the club’s recruitment team.

Journalist Andy Mitten has revealed that United are attracted to Santos specifically because of his “amazing” football brain, which sets him apart from other midfield options being considered.

Mitten also noted United’s belief that Santos has the profile to become Brazil’s first-choice number six, which underlines just how highly the club’s scouts regard his long-term potential.

Santos is only 22 years old but has already accumulated a variety of football environments across his young career, including spells at Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Strasbourg.

His loan move to Strasbourg proved particularly productive, with Santos registering nine goals and three assists in 26 appearances across all competitions during the 2024/25 season.

Those numbers from a central midfielder highlight his ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch, which is exactly the kind of profile modern football demands from that position.

The Guardian reported that Chelsea value Santos at around £50m, which would represent a significant investment but one that United’s hierarchy appear willing to consider seriously.

As Mitten put it, Santos is “a serious emerging talent” whose “value is likely to increase,” making any delay in completing a deal a potential financial risk for United.

He does carry some uncertainty, given that he has not yet fully established himself as a Premier League regular despite having experience in England with Chelsea.

Santos would not arrive at Old Trafford as an instant solution, and supporters should manage expectations about what he can deliver in his first season at the club.

However, United’s need to sign players before they become unaffordable is a very real concern, and Santos fits that bracket of talent on the rise.

His athleticism, composure and tactical awareness give him a strong foundation to develop into a genuinely influential central midfielder in England’s top flight over the coming seasons.

If the price is deemed sensible by the club, this could prove to be one of the more astute pieces of business United complete during the summer window.
