Mustafa Zico Launches Explosive FIFA Attack After Controversial Egypt Defeat To Argentina

Egypt forward Mustafa Zico has taken to Instagram to publicly blast FIFA following a deeply contentious World Cup Round of 16 defeat against Argentina.

The 3-2 loss at Atlanta Stadium sent Egypt crashing out of the tournament in dramatic and deeply disputed circumstances that have sparked widespread outrage.

Zico posted a scathing message on social media that left absolutely no room for ambiguity about how he and his teammates felt about the officiating.

“You brought us all the way here just to cheat every other team? This tournament is fixed for your favorite and we all see it. God is sufficient for us. Keep running your ‘favorite team’ World Cup. Nobody cares anymore because we already know who wins. Shame on FIFA,” he wrote.

Egypt had started the match brilliantly, racing into a 2-0 lead thanks to an early header from Yasser Ibrahim and a clinical 67th-minute strike from Zico himself.

The major flashpoint arrived when Zico thought he had extended Egypt’s lead further, only for a lengthy VAR review to overturn the goal due to an alleged foul in the build-up.

That decision shifted the momentum dramatically, and Argentina launched a stunning comeback through Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi, and Enzo Fernández in quick succession.

Egypt’s frustrations deepened further when the referee turned down two late penalty appeals before Fernández struck a controversial winning goal deep into stoppage time.

The Egyptian camp also disputed the winning goal itself, believing there were fouls in the build-up that should have prevented it from standing.

Adding to the chaos, Egypt manager Hossam Hassan was shown a yellow card after making an “X” gesture with his arms on the touchline during the match.

The crossed-arms “X” signal is FIFA’s own universal gesture designed to alert referees to alleged incidents of discriminatory or racist abuse during a match.

Under FIFA’s anti-racism protocol, the signal is intended to activate a three-step process involving stopping, then suspending, and ultimately abandoning the game if the situation goes unresolved.

Rather than following that procedure, the referee booked Hassan and allowed the match to continue, a decision that caused further fury within the Egyptian camp after the final whistle.

The Egyptian Football Association has since launched an official complaint against the French referee who took charge of the match.

The extraordinary sequence of events has turned this elimination into one of the most talked-about and controversial results of the 2026 World Cup tournament so far.
