Scotland World Cup Starter Angus Gunn Signs Multi-Year Deal With San Jose Earthquakes

San Jose Earthquakes have signed Scotland international goalkeeper Angus Gunn on a free transfer, with the deal running through the 2029-30 MLS season.

Gunn, 30, arrives in California fresh from representing Scotland at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he started all three of the team’s group stage matches.

The goalkeeper earned a clean sheet in Scotland’s opening 1-0 victory over Haiti, showcasing the form that made him an attractive signing for the Earthquakes.

Scotland’s World Cup campaign ended without progression to the knockout stage, suffering a 1-0 loss to Morocco and a heavy 3-0 defeat to Brazil in their remaining group games.

Gunn previously played in the English Premier League for Nottingham Forest, having signed with the club in August 2025 following four seasons at Norwich City.

Across his career, Gunn has amassed 218 first-team appearances and recorded 59 clean sheets, with stints at Nottingham Forest, Stoke City, Southampton, and Norwich City.

He has made 198 combined league appearances across the Premier League and the Championship over nine seasons, graduating originally from the Manchester City academy.

Earthquakes Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena expressed his enthusiasm for the signing, highlighting Gunn’s pedigree ahead of the second half of the season.

“We’re pleased to sign a quality goalkeeper in Angus Gunn with English Premier League and international experience, most recently as a starter at the World Cup,” said Arena. “We’re looking forward to integrating him into the club for the second half of the season and welcome him to San Jose.”

Gunn himself spoke about his excitement at joining the club during what could prove to be a pivotal period in San Jose’s campaign.

“It feels incredible to join the Earthquakes,” said Gunn. “Coming off the World Cup which was an unbelievable experience, I’m just really excited and grateful for the opportunity to come to San Jose and show the best version of myself.”

Gunn added that the club’s playoff positioning only added to his motivation to contribute immediately to the team’s push for silverware.

“We’re in a really good position for the playoffs, so hopefully we can focus on that with the right mentality,” he said.

The keeper will occupy an International Roster Slot that the LA Galaxy originally acquired from the Earthquakes on February 6 but are obligated to return at the opening of the Secondary Transfer Window on July 13.

San Jose currently sit second in the Western Conference with 32 points from a 10-win, 3-loss, 2-draw record heading into the second half of the MLS season.

The Earthquakes return to league action on Wednesday, July 22, hosting Orlando City SC at PayPal Park, before the 105th California Clasico against the LA Galaxy on July 25 at Stanford Stadium.
