Sandro Tonali has completed his move to Tottenham Hotspur and wasted no time in addressing the speculation that surrounded his transfer this summer.
The Italy international’s signing was officially confirmed on Tottenham’s website, bringing an end to weeks of intense transfer talk linking him with multiple clubs.
Tonali was keen to set the record straight on those rumours, insisting there was never any real competition for his signature despite widespread reports suggesting otherwise.
Speaking after completing the move, Tonali said: “I’m very happy to be here. When I arrived at the Club today, it felt fantastic. People said about there being four or five clubs – there was only one.”
The midfielder revealed that a lengthy conversation with the head coach played a significant role in convincing him that Tottenham was the right destination for his career.
“I spoke to the Head Coach for close to two hours about the Club, the fans, the stadium and our football. It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham,” Tonali said.
He also pointed to his previous experiences at the club’s stadium as another factor that drew him to north London this summer.
“I’ve played against Tottenham a few times and always found a great atmosphere made by great fans. I can’t wait to start the season,” the midfielder added.
Tonali also took time to deliver a moving farewell to the Newcastle United supporters who stood by him during what was clearly a very difficult personal period in his career.
Journalist Lee Ryder quoted Tonali as saying: “When things were hard for me, you were there. Not for one day did I feel alone. I felt it every time I was at St James’ Park. That’s something I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”
The 26-year-old’s words referenced the unwavering support he received from Newcastle fans during his ten-month FIFA ban, which kept him away from the game entirely.
His performances after returning from that suspension demonstrated real quality and resilience, making him one of the more sought-after midfielders available this summer.
Tottenham have made several other notable additions to their squad, with Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke also arriving as proven Premier League operators ahead of the new campaign.
The prospect of Tonali and Fernandes forming the engine room of a Tottenham midfield will be an exciting one for supporters hoping for an improvement after two difficult seasons.
Manager Roberto De Zerbi will now have a significantly stronger and deeper squad at his disposal as he looks to redirect the club onto a more positive trajectory this coming season.
