Manchester United are on the verge of finalising their move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with only one remaining step standing between the club and an official announcement.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided clarity on why the deal has not yet been confirmed, revealing that the two clubs have held a verbal agreement for approximately one month.
BBC Sport had previously reported that Manchester United agreed a £35m fee with Atalanta for the Brazilian midfielder, a figure that has not been disputed since it emerged.
Romano explained that the holdup is not related to any breakdown in negotiations between the two clubs, but rather to a procedural stage in Ederson’s medical process.
“Many questions on why Man United are not making official Ederson yet, because they have a verbal agreement with Atlanta, so the two clubs have an agreement since one month ago, but they are waiting for Ederson to have the second part of his medical with Manchester United in England before approving everything,” Romano said.
The transfer insider added further detail, confirming that documentation on both sides is essentially ready and waiting for the final medical clearance to be completed.
“So verbal agreement, club to club documents are prepared, first part of the medical, but waiting on the second part of the medical, the official one with Manchester United. That’s why Ederson is not official yet to Manchester United and we have to wait for these steps,” Romano said.
With paperwork reportedly prepared and a long-standing agreement already in place, supporters will be hopeful that no unexpected complications emerge to derail the move at this late stage.
Ederson is widely expected to serve as a replacement for Casemiro, who has departed Old Trafford, and would add significant depth and quality to the United midfield.
The deal is unlikely to represent the end of Manchester United’s midfield recruitment drive this summer, with further additions reportedly being explored by the club.
Sky Sports has linked United with both Aurelien Tchouameni and Alex Scott as additional midfield targets, suggesting the club is looking to overhaul that area of the pitch comprehensively.
A potential upgrade on Manuel Ugarte has also been discussed as part of the club’s broader ambitions to reshape their engine room ahead of the new season.
Once Ederson’s second medical stage is completed in England, United are expected to move swiftly to make the signing official and formally announce the deal.
