Manchester City have won the race to sign Leicester City winger Jeremy Monga, ending Arsenal’s hopes of landing the highly-rated teenage prospect this summer.
The deal, reported by David Ornstein, will cost City an initial £10 million, with the fee potentially rising to £12.5 million depending on add-ons and performance-related clauses.
Journalist Eduardo Hagn responded to Ornstein’s post on X with a blunt two-word verdict, writing simply: “Insane price.”
The reaction is understandable given Monga is just 16 years old and has accumulated barely any senior experience, with his playing time coming almost entirely in the Championship.
Arsenal were firmly in the running for Monga and had been considered serious contenders to land him before City ultimately won out in the transfer battle.
It appears the young Englishman was keen on a move to the Emirates Stadium, with one prominent Gunners source critical of the club over how they handled the pursuit.
City’s financial muscle gave them a decisive edge, as they were clearly more willing and able to meet Leicester’s substantial asking price for such a young and unproven talent.
Monga’s fee puts him in a different financial bracket entirely to Arsenal’s Max Dowman and Liverpool’s Rio Ngumoha, having already cost more than those two combined.
Whether Monga ultimately justifies that outlay remains to be seen, given the long history of highly-touted wonderkids failing to fulfil their early promise at the highest level.
Arsenal may feel in hindsight that the fee was simply too steep for a player yet to prove himself consistently, preferring instead to invest in players capable of making an immediate impact.
City, however, will be quietly delighted to have secured one of the country’s most highly-regarded young talents at a price that, for a club of their resources, remains relatively manageable.
Should Monga develop into the player many believe he can become, the £12.5 million could ultimately look like a very shrewd piece of business from the Premier League giants.
