Edwin Quintero, the 16-year-old set to join Arsenal in January 2027, made an immediate impact on his senior debut for Independiente del Valle on Friday.
The Ecuadorian teenager came off the bench in the 84th minute against Manta and needed just three minutes to find the net with a stunning solo effort.
Quintero picked up the ball on the right side, combined with Hugo Quintana via a smart one-two, then dribbled past two defenders before slotting calmly beyond the goalkeeper.
The goal drew widespread attention online and underlined why Arsenal moved so decisively to secure the youngster’s signature ahead of his 2027 arrival in north London.
Born in 2009, Quintero could barely contain his delight after scoring, sprinting to the corner flag with a beaming smile as teammates rushed over to congratulate him.
The match finished 4-0 to Independiente, extending their lead at the top of the Ecuadorian LigaPro table to a remarkable 13 points after just 17 matches played this season.
Independiente claimed the Ecuadorian top-flight title last season and have also won it previously during the Covid-impacted 2021 campaign, cementing their status as the country’s dominant force.
Edwin will not be making the move to Arsenal alone, with his twin brother Holger Quintero also confirmed to be joining Mikel Arteta’s squad in January 2027 following a deal struck last December.
Arsenal confirmed at the time that they would be “closely collaborating” with Independiente del Valle until both brothers officially complete their moves to the club.
The signing of the Quintero twins has been viewed as a major coup for Arsenal, reflecting the club’s heavy investment into South American talent identification and scouting infrastructure.
Their former coach Burbano has described the pair as the “new Ronaldinhos,” speaking glowingly to EL COMERCIO about what supporters can expect from the duo.
Burbano said: “People pay to see good football. They’re going to give you spectacular plays. They’re like Ronaldinho. Juggling, step-overs, whatever you can imagine, but they have to know when; first think about the team and then about that.”
Edwin in particular has frequently drawn comparisons to Brazilian superstar Neymar, with scouts and coaches highlighting his close control, balance, and elite dribbling ability as standout attributes.
With the LigaPro season running through until December, Edwin is expected to gain valuable senior experience before departing for England and linking up with his new Arsenal teammates shortly afterwards.
