Chelsea’s writers are at odds over how the club should handle Enzo Fernandez following a dramatic week of official statements from multiple parties.
Real Madrid released a ‘Comunicado Oficial’ on Friday morning, categorically denying any negotiations with Chelsea or Fernandez over a potential move for the midfielder.
Fernandez’s desire to move to the Santiago Bernabeu has been football’s worst-kept secret throughout the past several months of transfer speculation.
Football.london reported towards the end of May that the 25-year-old informed Chelsea of his desire to depart Stamford Bridge this summer.
Chelsea responded by placing a £120million price tag on the Argentine midfielder, a fee that looks increasingly reasonable given the activity in this summer’s transfer window.
If Real Madrid’s statement is to be believed, Fernandez could be denied his dream move, and the prospect of another club paying £120million for him appears highly unlikely at this stage.
Chelsea writer Bobby Vincent believes reintegrating a player who does not want to be at the club would be damaging, saying “I don’t think including him in the squad is the right thing to do.”
Vincent added that “Fernandez has been flirting with a move to Madrid for too long now and it’s beyond disrespectful to Chelsea,” though he acknowledged the Blues are right to hold out for big money.
However, Fernandez remains contracted at Chelsea until 2032, meaning the club must find a way to sell rather than allow the situation to fester indefinitely.
Fellow Chelsea writer Jake Stokes takes a similarly firm stance, arguing the Blues should “be prepared to accept a little less than £120m for his signature and get him off the books.”
Stokes noted that while Fernandez “hasn’t explicitly demanded to leave the Blues in the public domain,” his agent has fanned the flames enough that the situation has become untenable.
Stokes also suggested that if Real Madrid will not table a nine-figure fee, Chelsea should explore a player-plus-cash swap deal, with Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, or Alvaro Carreras cited as attractive targets.
Both writers ultimately agree that new Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso needs a squad of committed, focused players heading into what promises to be a critical season for BlueCo’s tenure at the club.
