Mainz are prepared to sell Kaishu Sano if the right offer arrives, handing Liverpool an encouraging boost in their reported pursuit of the midfielder.
The 25-year-old Japanese international has attracted significant attention following a strong showing for Japan at the World Cup and consistent performances in the Bundesliga.
Liverpool have been identified as a potential destination for the defensive midfielder, who is valued at around €60 million by his current club.
Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert has confirmed that the club holds no urgency to sell, but would not stand in the way of a serious offer from interested parties.
Bungert acknowledged that top players naturally attract Premier League interest, and that Sano is considered one of the best defensive midfielders in his position currently.
He stated: “Our big advantage is that the player still has a long-term contract, so we’re under no pressure at all and won’t be rushing anything.”
Bungert added: “If a club comes along with an offer, we’ll consider it. If, in our view, it’s not high enough for the player’s market value, then it’s also possible that Kaish? will stay with us longer.”
He also noted: “As of today, everything is still open. But we know, of course, that we have a player who is generating a lot of interest.”
The fact that Mainz are openly acknowledging interest and willing to consider offers suggests a transfer window departure is a genuine possibility this summer.
For Liverpool, a quality defensive midfielder could prove invaluable, providing defensive stability while allowing the club’s creative players to express themselves with greater freedom.
Sano himself would likely welcome a move to the Premier League, as representing a club of Liverpool’s stature would represent a significant step forward in his career.
The situation remains fluid, but Bungert’s comments have given hopeful clubs clarity on exactly what it would take to secure the Japanese international’s signature.
