Arsenal are refusing to walk away from their pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes this summer, pushing ahead with a proposed deal worth around £60 million.
The Gunners are continuing to work through intermediaries to try and land the Newcastle United captain, according to The Sun.
Newcastle have already knocked back Arsenal’s initial approach and are maintaining their stance that the 28-year-old Brazilian is not available for sale.
The situation is made more complex by the significant squad upheaval already taking place at St. James’ Park this summer.
Anthony Gordon has departed for Barcelona in a deal worth approximately £70 million, representing a major blow to the club’s attacking options.
Sandro Tonali is also set to leave, with The Guardian reporting that the Italian is heading to Tottenham in a transfer worth up to £100 million.
Losing Guimaraes on top of those two exits would make it three enormous departures in a single window, something that would place enormous strain on Eddie Howe’s squad.
Arsenal’s interest in Guimaraes stretches back several years, with the club having admired him even before his move to Newcastle United, and manager Mikel Arteta is still eager to bring in another top-level midfielder alongside Declan Rice.
Guimaraes brings a compelling combination of Premier League experience, aggression, leadership and technical quality that would suit Arsenal’s playing style and midfield structure immediately.
His ability to control tempo, win duels and progress the ball from deeper positions makes him a natural fit for what Arteta demands from his central midfielders.
Newcastle’s reluctance to sell is entirely understandable given the scale of departures they have already accepted this summer.
After banking significant fees for Gordon and Tonali, the club is under less financial pressure and therefore in a stronger position to resist Arsenal’s advances.
The £60 million figure that Arsenal are expected to put forward may well fall short of what Newcastle would consider acceptable for their captain.
Arsenal are right to maintain their interest and continue testing Newcastle’s resolve throughout the transfer window.
However, Arteta’s side must also be careful not to spend the entire summer fixated on a deal that may ultimately never materialise.
If Newcastle hold firm and Guimaraes himself does not push for the move, Arsenal will need credible alternatives ready to act upon quickly.
The coming weeks will reveal whether this pursuit can be converted into a genuine transfer or whether it remains a deal that Newcastle simply will not sanction at any realistic price.
