Erling Haaland’s Last-Gasp Strike Sends Norway Into World Cup Round Of 16 Against Brazil

Norway’s World Cup campaign continues to capture imaginations after Erling Haaland delivered another late, decisive goal to defeat Ivory Coast 2-1 in Arlington, Texas.

The match at Dallas Stadium, attended by more than 69,000 fans, saw Haaland quiet for long stretches before producing the moment that mattered most in the 86th minute.

Norway had conceded to Ivory Coast in the 74th minute, turning what had been a comfortable position into a nervous finale requiring a response from their talismanic striker.

Haaland duly delivered, tapping in a pass from Patrick Berg to seal the win and extend his remarkable scoring streak in official matches with the national team to thirteen consecutive contests.

Norway manager Ståle Solbakken was unequivocal in his assessment of what his striker means to the team, offering words that felt less like praise and more like a simple statement of fact.

“I think he’s the greatest goalscorer in the world. I think there’s no doubt about that,” Solbakken said. “Today he wasn’t that involved, but always if you get that chance, he scored the winning goal again. That’s his output for the national team. He brings calmness to the team when you have a player like him.”

The victory is a historic one, representing the first time Norway have ever won a knockout match at a major tournament, a milestone not lost on this generation of players.

Many of those players grew up hearing stories of Norway’s 1998 group stage win over Brazil, a moment Solbakken described as coming from football that was “more physical” than the flowing attacking play his current squad can produce.

Captain Martin Ødegaard led the celebrations while keeping focus firmly on what lies ahead, insisting the squad would take time to appreciate the achievement before preparing for Brazil.

“To go through to another round is unbelievable,” Ødegaard said. “Brazil is going to be a tough game, but in football everything is possible, but we’re going to give it a good try.”

Ødegaard also captured the spirit running through the squad, adding: “Hopefully we can keep dreaming and keep believing and keep like we did, but let’s prepare well and enjoy the moment.”

Celebrations, fittingly, will be modest and team-focused, with centre back Kristoffer Ajer revealing the squad’s plans for the evening at their base camp in North Carolina.

“We’re going to go to the hotel, eat a good meal and we’re lucky enough to have a pool in the hotel so we’re going to spend some time in there together,” Ajer said.

Beyond Haaland, Norway’s attacking depth is a genuine weapon, with Antonio Nusa, Alexander Sørloth, Oscar Bobb and Ødegaard all capable of hurting opponents in different ways.

But it is Haaland who remains the central figure, a player whose presence alone shifts the psychological balance of any match Norway play on this stage.

Ajer summed up the feeling inside the Norwegian camp with characteristic simplicity, saying: “I’m very happy he’s Norwegian. It’s brilliant he keeps scoring.”

Norway now face Brazil in the round of 16, a fixture loaded with historical resonance and a chance for this generation to surpass everything that came before them.
