Aston Villa have been monitoring a youngster at the World Cup who is open to leaving his current club soon.
Aston Villa’s transfer business continues as they search for and keep an eye on several versatile targets. One of them is Swedish youngster Lucas Bergvall, who is currently at the World Cup. The current Spurs man is reportedly likely to depart North London in search of new opportunities, preferably with regular minutes on the pitch.
According to a report by GiveMeSport, several clubs are circling around the Sweden international, including The Lions.
“Aston Villa are one of the two sides in talks to sign Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall in the summer transfer window.”
Bergvall arrived in London in the summer of 2024 and is under contract until 2031. However, he has struggled for regular playing time in his second season following the managerial changes at Spurs.
Due to the lack of guaranteed minutes under Roberto De Zerbi, the 20-year-old midfielder is keen to seek a new challenge. Chelsea and Aston Villa both made approaches to sign him last January, but the North London club refused to let him leave.
Now, Unai Emery’s men are likely to reignite their interest, although they will face competition from several clubs. Besides Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Napoli, and Juventus have also joined the race.
Tottenham are reportedly willing to sell him, considering the growing interest in his services. His asking price could potentially reach £57 million. It will be interesting to see whether Villa are willing to meet that valuation.
Bergvall has featured in 78 games so far, contributing two goals and nine assists in all competitions. He was part of the Spurs squad that won the Europa League in 2025. The Stockholm-born versatile midfielder played more regularly under Ange Postecoglou.
His primary position is as a box-to-box midfielder. However, he can also operate as an attacking midfielder, a defensive midfielder, or out wide on either flank.
To better assess his potential, his performances during the 2024/25 season are worth highlighting, as he was voted Spurs’ Player of the Season by the club’s supporters. Bergvall recorded an impressive pass completion rate of 88.7%, with accurate long balls at 67.4% and successful crosses at 42.9%.
His successful dribble rate stood at 51.3%, while his winning-duel success rate reached 51.5%. The midfielder, who has earned 13 international caps, including three at the current World Cup, also made 92 defensive contributions, including 39 tackles, 24 interceptions, and eight blocked shots.
The midfielder who has registered his first direct goal contribution in the national team in this year’s world cup might not be the one to replace Morgan Rogers, should he leave. Yet, he can be a great addition to the squad as Ross Barkley is getting older while Douglas Luiz’s loan spell ends. The latter is returning to his parent club, Juventus as Villa does not opt to activate the buying clause.
At his age, he definitely has the chance to develop in Villa Park and still have a chance to play at the top level as the Clarets and Blue are competing in the Champions League next season.
