England’s World Cup 2026 campaign has hit a rough patch at the worst possible time, with the Three Lions looking toothless against Panama in their final group game.
The match, still goalless heading into half time, has sparked an avalanche of furious reactions across social media from fans and journalists watching on in disbelief.
England beat this same Panama side 6-1 in a previous meeting, making the current display all the more baffling given the enormous quality gap between the two nations.
Marcus Rashford registered the best chance of the game so far, but even that effort was described as pretty tame, summing up the general lack of cutting edge on display.
Thomas Tuchel was brought in to replace Gareth Southgate with the express purpose of elevating England’s performances and taking the team to the next level of international football.
However, many supporters are now questioning whether that progression is actually happening, with selections and tactical decisions drawing widespread criticism from fans watching the game.
One post on X captured the mood bluntly, with user Dave Ellis writing “Tuchel should be done for crimes against football. This is pathetic.”
Respected football journalist Miguel Delaney was equally scathing, posting simply “This is outright bad at the moment from England” as the half time whistle approached.
Other fans questioned the entire identity of the team under Tuchel, with one user writing “Have no connection with this England side at all. What’s the gameplay or the identity under Tuchel, pass it until we bore the other team to death. Rubbish.”
One supporter on X also raised an uncomfortable question for those who previously criticised Southgate, writing “Where are all the people who thought Gareth Southgate was the main problem with England’s ‘unentertaining’ style of play?”
The situation is made more precarious by events elsewhere in the group, with Croatia leading Ghana 1-0 at the time of writing, meaning England are not guaranteed to win their group.
England do have options available from the bench, and Tuchel may well be forced into changes if the current starters cannot find a way through Panama’s defence in the second half.
