Arsenal are readying a second transfer approach for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, despite the Magpies making their position abundantly clear.
Reports emerged earlier this week confirming the Gunners held talks with the 28-year-old Brazil international’s representatives over a potential summer move.
Newcastle responded firmly, insisting that Guimaraes is not available for transfer and will not be sold during the current window.
Despite that unambiguous response, Arsenal are pressing ahead and expected to submit a fresh proposal to Newcastle, according to the Daily Mail.
The north London club’s persistence signals just how highly Mikel Arteta values the Brazilian as part of his plans for the season ahead.
Guimaraes is currently representing Brazil at the World Cup alongside Arsenal duo Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli, though he has not told Newcastle he wants to leave.
The former Lyon midfielder has been at St. James’ Park since January 2022 and has made 195 appearances for the club, scoring 31 goals across all competitions.
He was also part of the Newcastle side that ended a lengthy trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup during the 2024/25 season, cementing his status as a key figure at the club.
Guimaraes has two years remaining on his contract and is valued by Newcastle at around £55million, a fee Arsenal would need to match to have any realistic chance of securing his signature.
Arteta is keen to strengthen his midfield as the Gunners look to defend their Premier League title, and Guimaraes has been identified as a primary target to bolster that area of the squad.
However, former Tottenham and Fulham forward Darren Bent questioned whether the Brazilian would even walk straight into Arsenal’s starting lineup, telling talkSPORT: “If he wants to obviously play in the Champions League and the chance to win trophies then he’s going to have to agree to being a squad player.”
Bent added: “He doesn’t walk into any top side and start straight away. Man United he actually would. Arsenal just won the Premier League, but I think for Bruno, that’s not the priority for me.”
Should a deal be completed, Guimaraes would face serious competition for minutes from Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze, Martin Odegaard, and Myles Lewis-Skelly.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe previously dismissed transfer speculation surrounding his captain back in March, labelling reports of Manchester United interest as “nonsense” and defending Guimaraes’s commitment to the club.
Howe said at the time: “Bruno’s our captain, he’s fully committed. To say our captain is in discussions with another club is totally disrespectful to Bruno more than anything else. He is totally committed here.”
