Newcastle United have no sell-on clause in place for Elliot Anderson as the midfielder edges closer to completing a move to Manchester City.
The fee for Anderson is reported to be £116m with no add-ons included, according to Fabrizio Romano, making it a British record transfer.
Anderson moved from Newcastle to Nottingham Forest for £35m, a fee confirmed by Sky Sports, with no sell-on or buy-back clause attached to the deal.
Newcastle were in a weak negotiating position at the time of the original sale, largely because of PSR concerns that were putting the club under serious financial pressure.
According to BBC Sport, Newcastle needed to sell a homegrown player to comply with financial regulations, placing them under pressure to accept Forest’s terms without seeking additional protections.
The threat of a points deduction was very real for Newcastle at the time, which severely limited their ability to negotiate more favourable contract clauses with Nottingham Forest.
Anderson made just 44 Premier League appearances for Newcastle, with the majority of those coming from the bench, before eventually departing for the City Ground.
The 23-year-old has since blossomed into a world-class talent at Nottingham Forest, transforming himself into one of the most sought-after midfielders in European football.
Fabrizio Romano stated on Thursday evening that “Manchester City side believe price will be £116m with NO add-ons included” and that Anderson will “undergo his medical in the US this weekend.”
Even a 20 or 25 per cent sell-on clause would have returned tens of millions of pounds to Newcastle, a sum that could have significantly eased their ongoing financial difficulties.
Forest have made a remarkable profit on the deal, having purchased Anderson for just £35m before flipping him to Manchester City for well over three times that figure.
Newcastle supporters will be deeply frustrated by the situation, which raises serious questions about the club’s financial planning and transfer strategy in recent years.
The England international’s meteoric rise from a fringe Newcastle player to a British record signing is a story that will continue to sting on Tyneside for some time to come.
