Aston Villa have just been fined and handed a suspended fan ban by UEFA following their supporters’ unnecessary behaviour.
Aston Villa’s new season has yet to begin, but they have already been handed a fine and a suspended ban because of their fans’ behaviour. The incident took place during the Europa League final at Tupras Stadium in Istanbul.
BBC reported UEFA’s firm decision despite The Lions’ historic win over Freiburg, which ended their 30-year trophy drought.
“The Villans were subsequently charged by UEFA over racist and/or discriminatory behaviour of their supporters during the game. BBC Sport understands a banner was displayed which was of an offensive and derogatory nature.”
The fine for The Claret and Blue was announced on Wednesday, June 24, and amounts to €10,000 (£8,600). It was imposed by UEFA’s CEDB (Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body) following the display of the discriminatory banner.
Unfortunately, there is no clarity regarding which banner or which supporters were specifically responsible for the violation. It was only vaguely stated that the banner in question was displayed by members of the travelling support inside the stadium, despite the fact that many banners and club flags had been prohibited from being brought into the venue.
Meanwhile, the suspended ban on selling tickets for an away game has been imposed with a two-year probationary period. This means the ban will not be enforced automatically or immediately but could be activated should a similar violation occur within the next two years.
As a result, Aston Villa supporters can still travel to Salzburg to support Ollie Watkins and Co. in the UEFA Super Cup against PSG on August 12. That game has been scheduled before the sanction is announced.
Interestingly, Aston Villa are not the only club to receive fines and suspended sanctions. Both Freiburg, their opponents in the Europa League final, and PSG, their upcoming opponents in the UEFA Super Cup, have also been punished under UEFA’s disciplinary regulations.
The Bundesliga side have been sanctioned with a one-match stadium closure in European competition, suspended for a two-year probationary period, as well as a €30,000 fine due to a pitch invasion during the semi-final against Sporting Braga.
Meanwhile, Le Parisien have been fined even more heavily, receiving an €80,000 penalty plus an additional €10,875 for separate offences involving the lighting of fireworks and throwing objects onto the pitch.
The French giants have also been handed the same suspended one-match ban in European competition over a two-year probationary period. Those violations occurred during the Champions League final against Arsenal in Budapest.
