West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes is at the centre of a growing transfer battle between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has provided his latest update on the situation, indicating the race for Fernandes has narrowed down to just two clubs.
The 21-year-old is widely expected to leave West Ham following the club’s relegation from the Premier League to the Championship.
Romano posted on X on June 24, stating that the “clear feeling” surrounding the deal is that West Ham will sell to whoever delivers the strongest financial offer.
“Clear feeling on Mateus Fernandes deal as reported last week: he’s ending up to the club bringing best financial proposal to West Ham,” Romano wrote.
He added: “Mateus has opened doors to both Man United first and then Tottenham, now up to the clubs.”
The Portuguese midfielder has reportedly given the green light to a move to either club, leaving the decision firmly in the hands of United and Spurs.
Manchester United have significantly improved under Michael Carrick, finishing third in the Premier League in 2025/26 and securing Champions League football for the coming season.
Fernandes could fill an important void in the United midfield, with Casemiro having departed at the end of his contract and Manuel Ugarte potentially on his way out after falling out of favour.
Tottenham, on the other hand, are in the middle of a significant rebuilding phase following back-to-back 17th place finishes in the Premier League.
While a move to Spurs could offer Fernandes more guaranteed playing time in a less pressurised environment, United’s trajectory under Carrick appears the more attractive proposition for a player of his age.
Football Insider have previously linked Fernandes with Liverpool, and Romano has also mentioned Real Madrid as a club with interest in the talented young midfielder.
Despite those earlier links, Romano’s latest update suggests the race has effectively come down to United and Tottenham for the time being.
With West Ham prioritising the highest fee possible, whichever club blinks first with a compelling offer is likely to land one of the most sought-after young midfielders in English football.
