Chelsea Hold Positive Transfer Talks For Sporting Lisbon’s Maxi Araujo After Pedro Neto Approach

Chelsea have reportedly opened promising discussions over a potential summer move for Sporting Lisbon wide-man Maxi Araujo, according to recent reports.

The opportunity arose in an unusual fashion, with Sporting Lisbon initially approaching Chelsea to ask about the availability of winger Pedro Neto.

However, Neto has no interest in making the switch to the Portuguese club, meaning any prospect of that deal appears to be firmly off the table.

Despite Neto’s reluctance, Chelsea turned the situation to their advantage by using the contact to open talks over Sporting’s own player, Maxi Araujo.

According to reporter Simon Phillips, those conversations proved to be positive, raising genuine hope that a concrete deal could eventually materialise.

Araujo has been in outstanding form this season, registering 11 goals and seven assists across all competitions for both club and country.

The 24-year-old Uruguay international is a versatile operator, capable of performing at left-back, wing-back, or as a left-sided midfielder to a high standard.

That flexibility makes him an attractive prospect for new Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso, who is building a squad tailored to his preferred tactical system.

Alonso is well known for deploying a back three with attack-minded wing-backs, a setup that brought him significant success during his time at Bayer Leverkusen.

A player of Araujo’s profile fits neatly into that system, offering the energy, creativity, and end product that the role demands at the highest level.

Chelsea also have a specific positional need to address following the sale of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, leaving a clear vacancy on the left side of defence.

While some supporters will be disappointed to see the Spain international depart Stamford Bridge, the club appears to be targeting an upgrade in that area.

Cucurella showed moments of quality during his time at Chelsea but was not always consistent, and Araujo is seen as a younger option with considerable potential.

At just 24, the Sporting Lisbon star arguably has a higher ceiling and could develop into a key figure under Alonso’s management at the club.

Whether talks progress into a full transfer bid remains to be seen, but the initial signs suggest Chelsea are serious about pursuing Araujo this summer.
