Chelsea legend John Terry has publicly criticised the club’s decision to overlook him for the temporary head coach role following Liam Rosenior’s dismissal.
The Blues sacked Rosenior after just three and a half months in charge, turning instead to under-18s manager Calum McFarlane for interim duties for the second time this season.
McFarlane first stepped in following the departure of Enzo Maresca, taking charge of just two matches before Rosenior was appointed on a permanent basis.
The academy coach then returned to take charge of six matches at the end of the season, a run that included an FA Cup final appearance.
Terry made his feelings clear in an interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored, responding after Morgan described the snub as “borderline offensive” to the former Chelsea captain.
Terry said: “Now Piers, you’re 100% spot on. I’ve never thought that I could be Chelsea manager.”
He continued: “But when a manager leaves the football club and Chelsea are looking for an interim manager, there was no one in the building, the academy building or the first team building, that was more qualified than me in terms of their qualifications.”
Terry added: “More importantly, and above all of that, whether it was for one game or two games, there was no one more Chelsea than me.”
He was also clear about the limits of his ambitions, stating: “Now, did I think that I deserve the Chelsea manager job long-term? Absolutely not. Because Chelsea is way bigger than me.”
Terry acknowledged that if he wanted to land the role permanently in the future, he would need to pursue his own coaching journey first to earn that opportunity.
The former defender has previously spoken about a lack of opportunities in coaching, having only worked as assistant coach at Aston Villa and as a part-time mentor within the Chelsea academy setup.
Chelsea’s longer-term future now rests with Xabi Alonso, who was handed a four-year contract as head coach in mid-May following a high-profile appointment.
Alonso faces significant transfer decisions in the coming months, with the future of Enzo Fernandez a key topic as the Argentine has been linked with a move to Real Madrid.
Trevoh Chalobah is also among those potentially heading for the exit, with Serie A side Como reportedly pursuing an ambitious deal as they prepare for Champions League football.
