Tottenham Hotspur have made direct contact with Liverpool over a potential move for Dutch winger Cody Gakpo this summer transfer window.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi has personally identified the 27-year-old as a priority signing as he continues to reshape the squad at Spurs.

De Zerbi is working to establish a completely fresh identity at the North London club and views Gakpo as central to that vision going forward.

According to journalist Nicolo Schira, Tottenham are ready to submit a significant financial bid to Liverpool for the Dutch international winger.

Discussions between the relevant parties have already officially opened as Spurs look to test Liverpool’s resolve over selling the forward.

To persuade Gakpo to make the move from Anfield, Tottenham have placed a highly lucrative long-term contract offer on the table running until 2031.

Crucially, De Zerbi has personally assured the Dutch international that he will be handed a central, defining role within his tactical blueprint at the club.

The transfer speculation arrives at a particularly interesting moment, with Gakpo currently enjoying a stellar run of form on the biggest stage in world football.

On Saturday, Gakpo delivered a clinical player-of-the-match display during the Netherlands’ dominant 5-1 demolition of Sweden at NRG Stadium in Houston.

Playing with immense freedom off the left wing, Gakpo set up Brian Brobbey for the opening goal before netting two phenomenal second-half goals of his own.

His outstanding World Cup 2026 performances have come as something of a contrast to a rather underwhelming club season with Liverpool in the Premier League.

Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands side have looked dangerous throughout the tournament, with Gakpo serving as their focal point in the attacking third.

Liverpool’s transfer activity this summer has added further uncertainty around Gakpo’s long-term future at Anfield, with the club already signing Victor Munoz.
