Aston Villa have been linked with a summer transfer for a German international striker at the World Cup alongside their rivals in the Champions League.
Another Aston Villa transfer target has been identified recently as they are expected to be busy this summer. The German international, who is currently playing at the World Cup in North America, Nick Woltemade, is now under their watch. According to a report in AS, The Lions are in the mix to sign him.
“Aston Villa could potentially meet Newcastle’s asking price, though they aren’t the only suitors.”
Indeed, Unai Emery’s side are not the only club keeping tabs on the 24-year-old forward. Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, who are also competing in the Champions League next season, are keen on signing him too.
Woltemade joined Newcastle United last summer for £65 million plus add-ons from VfB Stuttgart. He is still under contract until the summer of 2031. Thus, it will be difficult to sign him permanently.
The Magpies are likely to ask for around £57 million from any potential suitors, including Aston Villa. However, he could be available for a loan spell if necessary. Such a deal might be negotiated after the World Cup, as his value could rise should he thrive with Die Mannschaft this summer.
His inconsistency last season, coupled with a lack of regular minutes in recent games, might push him to seek a regular starting role. Such a role might also be challenging to secure at Villa Park. The former Bremen man would more likely be used in rotation with Ollie Watkins and Tammy Abraham unless he proves his worth through his goalscoring ability.
Woltemade had a flying start at St James’ Park in the 2025/26 season. He showed fine form in his first 14 games across the Premier League, Champions League, and EFL Cup, registering seven goals and two assists.
Unfortunately, his goals dried up after netting a brace against Chelsea, which helped The Toon Army salvage a point. His own goal in the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland in front of his home supporters was probably his lowest moment, as it proved to be the only goal of the game and Newcastle lost 1-0 at home.
Overall, Woltemade featured in 51 games, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists last season. He even went scoreless from late December until May, which is quite concerning for a forward with such a high valuation.
Based on data from FotMob, Woltemade’s xG is 6.59, while his xA stands at 1.53. He seems to contribute well to the build-up play, with a pass completion rate of 76.3% and an accurate long-ball percentage of 53.3%.
The forward, who can also be deployed as a number 10, needs to improve his ball retention. His duel-winning percentage is only 38.2%, whereas his defensive contribution was respectable last season with 105 defensive actions, including 24 tackles and 21 clearances.
It will be interesting to see whether Villa are genuinely pursuing the striker with 11 international caps. His inconsistency could lead to another wasteful investment. Woltemade has yet to make any appearance in this year’s FIFA World Cup as he was only the unused substitute in the first two games,
