Tottenham Hotspur will not be pursuing a transfer for Mason Greenwood from Olympique de Marseille this summer, according to reports.
The 24-year-old forward has been linked with a Premier League return, but the Lilywhites have firmly ruled out any move for the winger.
Greenwood’s contract at the Orange Velodrome runs until June 2029, keeping him tied to the French club for the foreseeable future.
The former Manchester United academy graduate made 45 appearances across all competitions for Marseille last season, proving himself a key figure at the club.
Roberto De Zerbi was in charge for 32 of those appearances, during which time Greenwood scored 22 goals and contributed eight assists.
In the remaining 13 matches of the campaign, Greenwood added a further four goals and three assists to his impressive seasonal tally.
The connection between De Zerbi and Greenwood attracted significant scrutiny when the Italian was appointed as Tottenham’s permanent head coach on a five-year contract.
The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust stated that De Zerbi’s arrival “raises serious and far-reaching concerns,” citing comments he had previously made about Greenwood.
De Zerbi had described Greenwood, who had charges against him dropped in February 2023, as a “good guy” who paid a “heavy price” for what happened.
At the time, De Zerbi said: “I don’t want to get involved in anyone’s private life. All I can see is that Mason seems a good lad; he paid in a strong way for what happened.”
He continued: “When I look at him as a person, I feel sad for what happened in his life, without getting into the details. Because the person I know here is very different to the one that has been described, especially in England.”
Following his appointment at Spurs, De Zerbi moved quickly to address the controversy in his first interview with club media, issuing a clear apology.
He said: “I have never wanted to downplay the issue of violence against women or violence against anyone more broadly. I apologise to those who I offended with this subject matter.”
De Zerbi added: “I have a daughter, and I’m very sensitive to these things and always have been. I hope that over time, people will get to know me better.”
Speaking ahead of his first game in charge, De Zerbi again addressed the topic directly, saying: “I have always been against – always – any type of violence, especially against women. But not only violence, even just sexist jokes or other sexist behaviours.”
He concluded: “I have a daughter, and I’m directly affected by it. I know who I am. I know the type of person I am, so I wasn’t annoyed by the questions – I’m just sad about them.”
With Greenwood off the table entirely, Tottenham’s recruitment focus this summer remains firmly elsewhere as De Zerbi begins building his squad.
