Real Madrid have welcomed Jose Mourinho back as manager, but the Portuguese coach has already run into one of the club’s most unusual restrictions.
Los Blancos maintain a comprehensive partnership with BMW that prevents players and staff from driving any other vehicle brand to the Bernabeu or training ground.
The rule is absolute and applies across the board, meaning even a figure as commanding as Mourinho cannot escape its reach.
Mourinho has built up an enviable personal collection over the years, including a £200,000 Bentley and a Jaguar F-Pace among his most notable vehicles.
His preferred car is understood to be a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, reportedly gifted to him by former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich back in 2007.
The iconic motor was valued at around £250,000 and Mourinho arrived for his opening training session at Benfica last September driving the very same car.
With Real Madrid’s BMW policy firmly in place, that Ferrari and the rest of his fleet will be staying parked up during his time at the club.
The former Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, Roma and Benfica manager will instead need to select a BMW from a predetermined catalogue of approved vehicles.
Mourinho is not the first high-profile arrival to face this quirk, as Trent Alexander-Arnold encountered the same restriction following his £8.4 million transfer from Liverpool.
Alexander-Arnold was unable to drive his £130,000 Range Rover P530 to work as he might have preferred after making the move to Spain.
In fairness, the terms of the deal are far from punishing, as all Real Madrid players reportedly receive a fresh BMW each season to drive to training.
Current stars Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe both drive a BMW XM, a 748-horsepower machine that costs approximately £135,000 and reaches 60 miles per hour in just 3.8 seconds.
Vinicius Junior has been seen using a BMW i7 M70 xDrive as his vehicle of choice, giving Mourinho plenty of inspiration when picking from the available range.
Anticipation is building ahead of Mourinho’s reunion with president Florentino Perez, 13 years after his first stint at the club drew to a close.
