Newcastle United Hold Talks Over Gabriel Martinelli And Leandro Trossard As Victor Munoz Transfer Falls Away

Newcastle United have been actively exploring transfer alternatives after missing out on Osasuna winger Victor Munoz to Liverpool in the summer window.

Liverpool are understood to have moved quickly to trigger Munoz’s release clause, a fee Newcastle were hesitant to meet despite entering advanced talks over the 22-year-old.

The Magpies had reservations about the financial commitment required, while Liverpool showed no such uncertainty and acted decisively to secure the winger’s signature.

Newcastle had already been considering other options for some time, with Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli, and Cody Gakpo all understood to have been discussed as potential targets.

Conversations have already taken place between Newcastle and Arsenal as the Tyneside club sought information on the availability of both Trossard and Martinelli.

Newcastle were directly informed that Trossard is in advanced talks over joining Besiktas, making a move for the Belgian winger look unlikely at this stage.

Martinelli remains available, however, and Newcastle have been gathering information on what a deal for the Brazilian forward could realistically cost.

One source explained the club’s cautious approach, stating: “Newcastle have been exploring other options, they weren’t putting all their eggs into the Munoz basket.”

The same source added: “They’ve asked Arsenal about Trossard and Martinelli. They also like Cody Gakpo, but the current feeling seems to be that Martinelli could be cheaper.”

Reinforcing the club’s patient strategy, the source continued: “Nothing’s advanced yet, and Newcastle won’t rush this. They weren’t entirely convinced about meeting Munoz’s release clause, and they’re prepared to wait to find a deal they’re fully convinced strengthens their squad whilst still representing good value for money.”

Tottenham are also known to be interested in Gakpo, and could make a move for the Liverpool forward, though Newcastle have been hovering as well.

The Munoz setback could push Newcastle into accelerating their pursuit of Gakpo, with Eddie Howe clearly in need of wide attacking reinforcements this summer.

The search for a winger comes in the context of Anthony Gordon’s exit, which has left a significant gap in Newcastle’s attacking options on the flanks.

Compounding the issue, Nick Woltemade could also depart St James’ Park, with Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, and Aston Villa all understood to have registered interest in the Germany international.

Woltemade has struggled to settle under Eddie Howe, and the club would be prepared to sanction his sale after just one season at the club.

Newcastle’s broader plan this summer is to reshape their attack, with both Woltemade and Yoane Wissa having failed to adequately replace Alexander Isak following his move to Liverpool.
