Tottenham And Manchester City Enter Active Talks To Sign Sandro Tonali As Newcastle Brace For £100m Battle

Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs has confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City are both actively in talks with Sandro Tonali’s camp this summer.

Newcastle are bracing themselves for a highly competitive bidding war, with multiple Premier League heavyweights circling the Italian midfielder.

New Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi has reportedly identified his compatriot as a top priority target to rebuild the North London club’s midfield ahead of next season.

Manchester City, meanwhile, view Tonali as an elite profile capable of adding significant tactical depth to their already formidable engine room.

Arsenal are also part of the picture, having made an enquiry back in January, with Mikel Arteta’s side still weighing up their midfield options for this summer window.

Jacobs posted the following update on X, laying out the full scope of the situation surrounding the Newcastle midfielder’s future at St James’ Park.

“Newcastle braced for bids for Sandro Tonali and expecting multiple suitors. Spurs and Manchester City both in talks. Arsenal enquired in January and are still assessing midfield options for this summer. A return to Italy very unlikely due to cost, even though Tonali wants to play in Serie A again one day. Newcastle looking for around £100m including add-ons.”

Newcastle are holding a firm negotiating stance and will not entertain any offers that fall short of their £100m valuation, including add-ons.

Despite Tonali personally harbouring a desire to play in Serie A again one day, a return to Italy this summer is considered very unlikely given the enormous transfer fee involved.

Tonali has established himself as one of the most important players in Eddie Howe’s setup since arriving from AC Milan, making 110 appearances across all competitions.

During that time he has contributed 10 goals and 10 assists, underlining his ability to influence games in the final third as well as the middle of the park.

His passing accuracy of 84.4% and 71 accurate long balls this past season place him firmly among the upper tier of deep-lying playmakers across European football.

Those statistics go a long way to explaining why clubs of the calibre of Tottenham, Manchester City, and Arsenal are all monitoring the situation so closely this window.

Whichever club ultimately wins the race for Tonali’s signature will be making a transformative addition to their midfield for the season ahead.

With Newcastle’s asking price set at £100m and multiple suitors in active discussions, the battle for Tonali is shaping up to be one of the defining transfer sagas of the summer.
