Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo Points Barcelona And PSG To Julian Alvarez’s €500m Release Clause

Julian Alvarez appears increasingly likely to remain at Atletico Madrid after the club’s president issued a firm and public warning to interested parties across Europe.

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has told any club pursuing the Argentine striker to consult the player’s existing contract before making further advances.

That contract contains a €500m release clause, a figure designed to make any potential move virtually impossible for even the wealthiest clubs in world football.

Barcelona, PSG, and Real Madrid have all been linked with Alvarez during the current transfer window, making him one of the most talked-about names of the summer.

When three clubs of that calibre register interest in a player, a departure typically becomes a matter of when rather than if, but Atletico have shown no sign of caving to external pressure.

Real Madrid’s approach was reportedly dismissed out of hand by Atletico, while neither Barcelona nor PSG have followed up with any serious or concrete offer since initial interest emerged.

In a direct interview with El Desmarque, Cerezo made his position unmistakably clear by pointing all interested parties toward the terms already written into Alvarez’s deal.

“It seems like this is the story of the summer; you all know exactly how things stand. Julian is an Atletico Madrid player, and I believe he will remain an Atletico Madrid player,” Cerezo said.

Those words represent one of the more definitive statements made by a club president during a transfer window that has been full of speculation and rumour surrounding the forward.

Alvarez himself has not publicly pushed for a move, and without that kind of internal pressure from the player, Atletico appear to hold all the leverage in any negotiation that might develop.

Barcelona and PSG will now need to decide whether any pursuit of Alvarez is worth the considerable financial and political energy required to break Atletico’s resolve this summer.

With Cerezo drawing such a clear line in the sand, the focus for those clubs may soon shift to alternative attacking targets as the transfer window continues to evolve.

For now, Julian Alvarez looks set to begin the new season in red and white, with Atletico Madrid making it very clear they have no intention of letting their star forward go.
