Marcus Rashford is currently focused on England’s World Cup campaign, with his side set to face Croatia in their opening game in the United States.
The 28-year-old forward will face significant decisions about his future once he returns from the Americas following the tournament.
Barcelona allowed their €30m buy option on Rashford to expire, meaning he is now on course to return to Old Trafford for preseason training.
Rashford had expressed a desire to remain at Barcelona, and head coach Hansi Flick was reportedly keen on keeping him at the club.
However, after Barcelona completed the signing of Anthony Gordon, the Blaugrana appear less certain about pursuing a permanent move for Rashford.
The Spanish club have not ruled out a move entirely, but Rashford is not considered a priority target for them heading into the summer window.
As reported by The Athletic, Rashford would prefer to remain at Manchester United this summer rather than join any other club in the Premier League.
A £40m release clause exists in his contract that any side can activate, barring Liverpool and Manchester City, with several Premier League clubs having expressed interest.
Former loan side Aston Villa have been linked with Rashford on a number of occasions, making them one of the more persistent domestic suitors for the forward.
Rashford has two years remaining on his Manchester United contract, and while a move seemed likely, it has been suggested for the first time that he could stay at the club.
Despite that possibility, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick held talks with the leadership group and there are no current plans to reintegrate Rashford into the squad.
MEN reported that Carrick was keen on bringing Rashford back, but after those discussions, the club’s position shifted away from welcoming him back into the fold.
Manchester United are instead expected to pursue a permanent sale for Rashford this summer, whether that destination turns out to be Barcelona or elsewhere.
The situation leaves Rashford in an uncertain position, with his preferred outcomes at both United and Barcelona appearing increasingly difficult to achieve as the window progresses.
