Sandro Tonali’s Next Club Sparks Debate As Arsenal, Tottenham And Manchester City Circle Newcastle Star

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has emerged as one of the most sought-after players in European football this summer transfer window.

Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester City have all been credited with serious interest in the Italy international, according to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Romano reports that Tottenham have identified Tonali as the ‘ideal’ candidate to help them recover after suffering back-to-back relegation scares in the Premier League.

The Athletic have reported that a sale ‘remains possible’, though Newcastle are yet to receive any ‘concrete offers’ for the 26-year-old midfielder.

Newcastle would reportedly demand a ‘high fee’ for Tonali, whose situation is being monitored by ‘multiple elite clubs’ across the English top-flight.

Tonali’s contract at St James’ Park is not set to expire until June 2028, giving the Magpies considerable leverage in any potential negotiations this summer.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told reporters last month that he wants to be ‘very ambitious’ in the transfer window, signalling a willingness to compete for top targets.

Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi has also outlined his desire to ‘build a new team’ following a turbulent period that saw Spurs finish 17th in consecutive Premier League seasons.

One argument in favour of a Tottenham move is that De Zerbi, a fellow Italian, could convince Tonali that he would be the central figure around whom a rebuilt Spurs side is constructed.

Tottenham have also opened up their wage structure this summer, which should allow them to compete more seriously on a financial level with rival clubs chasing Tonali’s signature.

However, the case for Arsenal centres on the sheer volume of fixtures Arteta’s side competes in, which could guarantee Tonali significant playing time across multiple competitions.

Arteta is six and a half years into a long-term project at the Emirates, which offers the kind of stability and ambition that a player of Tonali’s calibre is likely to demand.

De Zerbi, by contrast, has not managed more than 100 games at a single club since departing Sassuolo in 2021, raising questions about long-term continuity at Spurs.

Tonali has contributed 10 goals in 110 appearances for Newcastle, and is regarded as capable of operating as either a number six or a number eight in midfield.

With Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice already in Arteta’s squad, some observers question whether Arsenal actually need Tonali as much as their rivals do this window.

One viewpoint put forward is that neither Arsenal nor Tottenham may be the best destination, with Manchester City and Manchester United also mooted as more suitable fits for the Italian’s ambitions.

Whatever the outcome, the battle for Sandro Tonali’s signature looks set to be one of the defining transfer sagas of the summer.
