Tottenham Target Sandro Tonali In £230m Summer Spending Push To Support Roberto De Zerbi

Tottenham Hotspur have approached the camp of Sandro Tonali as the club looks to make a genuine statement of intent this summer transfer window.

The 26-year-old Newcastle United midfielder has been identified as a key target as new head coach Roberto De Zerbi begins building his squad at Spurs.

Tottenham’s owners, the Lewis family, pledged action after a torrid season that saw the club avoid Premier League relegation by just two points on the final day.

In a statement released three days after that nervy conclusion, the Lewis family declared “we are investing in it, you will see more of this in the coming months, we know that actions will speak louder than words.”

The family also acknowledged “eroded trust and we have to win that back,” signalling an awareness of just how strained relations with the fanbase have become.

Two things win over supporters of a football club, and Tottenham must now deliver both: sound decision-making and meaningful investment in the transfer market.

De Zerbi has reportedly made it clear to Tonali’s representatives exactly how central the Italian midfielder would be to his plans at Spurs this coming season.

The connection between manager and player runs deep, with Tonali having come through at De Zerbi’s hometown club Brescia before going on to star at AC Milan and then Newcastle.

His engine and ability on the ball would allow him to be De Zerbi’s quarterback, receiving the ball on the edge of the box, resisting the press and firing quick passes between the lines.

Arsenal were offered Tonali earlier this season, with their sporting director Andrea Berta said to be a fan, meaning Tottenham will be wary of another transfer hijack after last summer’s experience with Eberechi Eze.

Manchester City, PSG, and Real Madrid have all been credited with interest in Tonali in recent months, with fears growing that Spurs’ name may simply be used to pressure one of those clubs into action.

Newcastle have not yet been contacted over the deal, though there is a growing expectation that Tonali will be sold this summer with a price tag reportedly reaching up to £100 million.

That figure would be almost double anything Tottenham have previously paid for a single player, making this arguably the most ambitious piece of business in the club’s recent history.

Tonali is not the only target, with Tottenham also pursuing £70 million-rated Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton and Savinho from Manchester City, the Brazilian reportedly valued at around £60 million.

Those three deals combined, alongside De Zerbi’s desire for a new striker, would represent a near £230 million investment in transforming Tottenham into genuine top-four challengers.

Free agent arrivals Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have already been secured, while Pedro Porro has signed a new contract that placed the Spaniard among the club’s top earners.

The Lewis family are expected to pump further funds into the club in the weeks ahead, with the fanbase watching closely to see whether promises translate into genuine progress.

As was made abundantly clear in the owners’ own words, actions will speak louder than words, and this summer is when that statement must be proven true.
