Chelsea’s £51.7m Marc Cucurella Sale Puts Lewis Hall And Antonee Robinson In The Frame

Chelsea completed the £51.7 million sale of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid on Monday, leaving new manager Xabi Alonso short of options at left-back.

The 27-year-old Spaniard had three years remaining on his contract but made his desire to leave Stamford Bridge perfectly clear in recent months.

Cucurella spent almost four years at Chelsea before returning to his homeland, and his departure has opened up a genuine positional void on the left side of defence.

Jorrel Hato enjoyed an outstanding second half of the 2025/26 season, and the highly-rated Dutchman’s form has softened the blow for most Chelsea supporters.

However, beyond Hato, Chelsea have no out-and-out left-back options in their senior squad, with versatile players like Malo Gusto, Reece James, Josh Acheampong, and Levi Colwill all preferred in other positions.

Valentin Barco, who can play on the left side of defence, is expected to join from Strasbourg following his World Cup campaign with reigning champions Argentina, though the squad still looks thin in that area.

Chelsea reporters Bobby Vincent and Sam Truelove have both argued the club should move quickly to address the problem, with former academy product Lewis Hall emerging as a popular option among supporters.

Hall spent 12 years coming through Chelsea’s academy before leaving on an initial loan deal to Newcastle United, with the Magpies later making the deal permanent for an initial £28 million, with a potential £7 million in add-ons.

The 21-year-old England international was controversially left out of the World Cup squad this summer, and questions remain over whether he would be willing to return to a club he departed to further his development.

Vincent pointed out that Hall’s potential return would not necessarily disrupt Hato’s progression, given the Dutchman is capable of playing as a centre-back as well as at left-back.

However, Vincent also acknowledged that Chelsea re-signing Hall would amount to an admission of a mistake, which could complicate any potential negotiation with Newcastle.

Truelove noted that Cucurella made 50 appearances for the Blues during the 2025/26 season and was one of the more consistent performers, meaning his absence will be heavily felt throughout the squad.

Truelove also highlighted Fulham’s Antonee Robinson as an alternative option, describing the 28-year-old as “perhaps more of a rogue shout” but a player who brings considerable Premier League experience.

Robinson has impressed at Craven Cottage since joining from Wigan in 2020, and with only two years left on his contract, Truelove believes he offers decent value for Chelsea this summer.

The left-back debate is set to dominate Chelsea’s transfer window, with Alonso needing to address the position before the new season begins if the club is to avoid being exposed on that flank.
