Lucas Bergvall has etched his name into Swedish football history after a stunning World Cup debut at just 20 years old.
The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder made his first appearance at the showpiece tournament this week as Sweden faced Tunisia in their opening group game.
Sweden ran out emphatic 5-1 winners over Tunisia at Estadio Monterrey in Guadalupe, with Graham Potter’s side delivering a dominant and convincing performance.
Bergvall was introduced from the bench in the 65th minute, at which point Sweden were already commanding the match at 3-1 ahead.
At that precise moment, the Spurs starlet became the youngest player in Sweden’s history to appear at a World Cup, surpassing a long-standing national record.
The young midfielder wasted no time making his presence felt, registering 14 touches, one shot, one dribble, one tackle, one interception, and one clearance during his cameo.
One early run down the right saw Bergvall deliver a looping cross that Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres was inches away from connecting with inside the Tunisia penalty area.
It was his pressing and energy that ultimately led to his most decisive moment of the night, when he nipped in to win the ball from a Tunisian defender.
Bergvall then cleverly poked the ball into the path of Brighton midfielder Yasin Ayari, who finished emphatically to complete his brace on the night.
That assist meant Bergvall also broke the record for the youngest Swedish player to register an assist at a World Cup, a remarkable double achievement on debut.
The assist also created an interesting Tottenham connection on the night, with Ayari being the future brother-in-law of Spurs star Dejan Kulusevski.
Ayari is engaged to Kulusevski’s sister Sandra, and the couple have a daughter named Leonie together, adding a personal element to the memorable Sweden victory.
Bergvall will now be hoping to build on his historic debut in the remaining group games and beyond as Sweden push deeper into the tournament.
After the World Cup concludes, the 20-year-old will return to north London and link up with Roberto De Zerbi ahead of what promises to be an exciting season at Spurs.
