Xabi Alonso Eyes Five Transfer Targets As Chelsea Seek Marc Cucurella Replacement In Battle With Manchester United

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso faces an immediate challenge after Marc Cucurella completed his £51.7 million move to Real Madrid, leaving a significant gap in the squad.

Alonso does not officially begin work at Stamford Bridge until July 1, yet he has already lost one of his most important defenders ahead of a busy transfer window.

The 27-year-old had only last week spoken positively about his future at Chelsea, saying he had been “filled with confidence” after speaking with Alonso while on international duty with Spain.

Despite those encouraging words, interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid ultimately turned his head, with Champions League football proving impossible to resist.

Cucurella’s departure was confirmed on Monday morning, with the Spain international signing a six-year contract with Real Madrid and leaving Chelsea after four years at the club.

His exit creates a pressing need at left-back, with only Jorrel Hato considered a natural in-house option, and the club are now exploring the transfer market for suitable replacements.

Argentine left-back Valentin Barco is reportedly close to a move to Chelsea, with French reports suggesting only an official announcement separates the 23-year-old from becoming a Blue.

Lewis Hall is another option under consideration, with the Chelsea academy graduate having sealed a permanent £28 million transfer to Newcastle, though Manchester United are also believed to hold strong interest in the 21-year-old.

If Chelsea push hard for Hall, it could trigger a bidding war with Manchester United, who are searching for a long-term replacement for Luke Shaw, and reports suggest a fee around £50 million could be sufficient.

Real Madrid’s Fran Garcia is also in the picture, having previously worked under Alonso, with the 26-year-old potentially available on loan given a crowded left-back situation at the Bernabeu following Cucurella’s arrival.

Sporting’s Maxi Araujo is another name on Chelsea’s radar, with Portuguese outlet Record claiming the club have been monitoring the Uruguayan, who carries a £69.1 million release clause but could be available for less.

Araujo impressed heavily against Arsenal in the Champions League last season and is currently featuring at the World Cup, meaning any deal may need to move quickly given his growing profile.

Perhaps the most intriguing option is Alejandro Grimaldo, who flourished under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen, contributing 10 goals and 15 assists in the Bundesliga during their historic unbeaten title-winning season in 2023/24.

The 30-year-old registered 26 goal contributions in all competitions last term and would arrive with an intimate understanding of Alonso’s preferred 3-4-2-1 system, though recent reports link him with a move to Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea face a competitive summer window with multiple high-priority positions to fill, and the race to find Cucurella’s successor will be an early indicator of Alonso’s squad-building ambitions at Stamford Bridge.
