Aston Villa brace for the new Premier League regulations ahead of the new season

A new set of rules has been introduced for the 2026/27 season, affecting every side, including Aston Villa.

The Premier League’s starting date for the new season has been confirmed. A number of changes have been included as well. According to a report by Birmingham Mail, the Premier League has confirmed these changes.

“Premier League lawmakers have passed new rules that will be implemented from the start of the new season in August.”

The season kicks off on August 22 and is expected to end on May 30, 2027. The starting date of the upcoming campaign has been set one week later than last season due to the World Cup fixtures in North America.

The new season sees the return of Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City. They replace Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley and West Ham United, which have been relegated to the second tier.

Regarding the new regulations, here are the key changes in the upcoming campaign in the English top flight.

Restarts

The most crucial change is probably the countdown for two set-piece scenarios on the pitch: goal kicks and throw-ins. There will be a five-second countdown for each of them. Each team must not exceed that duration when taking them. Otherwise, the opposition team will be awarded a corner kick and a throw-in respectively.

This is crucial for Aston Villa as they rely heavily on dead-ball situations to score goals in the past few seasons. Unai Emery’s men will need to have clarity on what they do once they receive such set plays.

It will definitely be something that is likely to be practised regularly at Bodymoor Heath with Austin MacPhee. He is the club’s specialist in charge of the tactical side of set pieces.

Another change regarding dead-ball situations concerns the restart of play. If a team is proven to be deliberately delaying a restart, the opposition will be given the opportunity to take it instead.

Injuries

The next change is related to injured players. Anyone on the pitch who requires medical treatment due to a potential injury will be expected to leave the field for a minimum of 60 seconds for further checks and assessment.

This is actually longer than the previous rule, which only required them to stay out of the game for 30 seconds. This alteration could impact a team if a key player is out of the game for one minute. That is quite a long time, and anything could happen during such a period.

Any team manager, including Emery, will have to get used to it, as it could be either an advantage or a disadvantage depending on the circumstances on the pitch.

Substitutions

The next change concerns player substitutions. The process will only be given 10 seconds. The player being substituted must leave the pitch immediately. Otherwise, it will disrupt the entire team.

If a player does not leave within that period of time, the substitute cannot enter the pitch immediately. He will have to wait until the next stoppage before being allowed to come on.

Playing with 10 men, even briefly, can be fatal if a team is not prepared for it. Anything could happen during that period of the game.

VAR

Last but not least, the next change concerns VAR. This time it relates to VAR reviews. Reviews will only be allowed if a player has mistakenly received a second yellow card, particularly due to an officiating error. Without such a review, a mistaken decision could potentially lead to or prevent a red card, which would be unfair.

However, reviews will not be conducted if a player receives only a first yellow card. Incidents that could lead to a potential second yellow card will not be reviewed by VAR, nor will decisions involving mistaken corner kicks.
