Chelsea Agree £51.7m Deal To Send Marc Cucurella To Real Madrid After World Cup

Chelsea have agreed a deal worth up to £51.7million to sell Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid this summer.

An initial fee of £47.4million has been agreed between the two clubs, with approximately £4.3million in add-ons also included in the package.

The official documentation is still being finalised, but the transfer is expected to be completed within the week once the paperwork is processed.

Cucurella will make the move to the Spanish capital after his involvement at the World Cup concludes, meaning a post-tournament switch is firmly on the cards.

Chelsea were not actively looking to offload the defender, but Cucurella was open to the right opportunity and was keen to leave Stamford Bridge.

The 27-year-old had only signed a new contract with the Blues last summer, and still had three years remaining on that deal when the agreement was struck.

Atletico Madrid had also registered serious interest in the Spain international, but Real Madrid moved quickly to beat their La Liga rivals to his signature.

Cucurella made 150 appearances for Chelsea after joining from Brighton and Hove Albion in 2022 in a £63million transfer, winning the Conference League and Club World Cup during his time at the club.

The timing of the deal is notable given that Cucurella had recently spoken positively about Xabi Alonso’s appointment as Chelsea manager, saying Alonso “inspired a lot of confidence” in him after the pair held talks.

Cucurella also noted: “I’ve also spoken with (Alejandro) Grimaldo and Borja (Iglesias), who have worked with him, and they spoke very highly of him. The project seems very interesting.”

Despite the warm words about Chelsea’s new project, Cucurella will instead follow Alonso to his previous employer, with the manager having taken charge of Real Madrid in May 2025 before departing by mutual consent in January 2026.

Alonso’s exit from Madrid came just one day after a 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Supercopa final, making Cucurella’s arrival at the Bernabeu a curious link back to his former Chelsea boss.

Cucurella had previously been coy when quizzed about transfer speculation, telling Marca: “I’m not reading much and I’m not paying much attention. My agents already know they don’t have to tell me anything.”

He added: “I’m very happy where I am, and so is my family. Whatever happens, happens. Right now, I’m focused on the World Cup and enjoying this experience, which is my first and who knows if it will be my last.”
