Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Junior has once again delayed talks over his contract situation at the Santiago Bernabeu, with his deal continuing to run down.
Both the Brazilian winger and the club have consistently called for calm over the past 18 months, yet no meaningful progress has been made toward securing a renewal.
Reports from last summer suggested Vinicius was pushing to be placed on the same wages as Kylian Mbappe, a claim that has stirred significant attention inside and outside the club.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has denied those wage demands, while Vinicius himself has publicly insisted that he wants to remain at the club.
The most recent reporting suggests Vinicius will either run down his contract and leave on a free transfer or agree a new deal, rather than push for a move in the current window.
When pressed on his future, Vinicius made clear that his current focus lies entirely with the Brazilian national team and the World Cup tournament.
“Right now I’m focused on the national team. I’ll talk about everything related to Real Madrid after the World Cup. Right now I’m only focused on my country, my teammates, and having a great tournament,” he told Diario AS during their pre-match press conference.
The 24-year-old spoke with real optimism about Brazil’s chances at the tournament, pointing to the influence of manager Carlo Ancelotti as a major source of confidence heading into the competition.
“I’m at the most special and important moment of my career. I’m at the physical and technical level I’ve always dreamed of. I haven’t suffered any injuries this season. I’ve prepared myself very well to get to this point. Playing with Ancelotti gives me a lot of peace of mind, a lot of freedom and confidence to do everything I’ve already done with the national team and at Real Madrid,” he added.
Vinicius also made clear that personal statistics are not his priority, emphasising instead how far Brazil can go in the tournament.
“It’s eight games, and I can change this story for our country and for the players. I’m not even talking about goals and assists, but about playing well and giving the team the confidence it needs. It doesn’t matter how many goals I score. What matters is how far we go,” he said.
Brazil enter the competition as one of the tournament favourites, though they are not widely tipped as the likely winners heading into the later stages.
The World Cup represents Ancelotti’s first major international tournament as a national team manager, with Vinicius and Raphinha expected to lead the Brazilian attack throughout.
