Marcel Desailly Explains Why Darwin Nunez Would Thrive At Chelsea Under Xabi Alonso

Former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly has backed Darwin Nunez to succeed at Stamford Bridge, claiming the striker would flourish under the right conditions.

Nunez spent three years at Liverpool after joining from Benfica in 2022, scoring 40 goals across 143 appearances before departing last summer.

The Uruguayan made the move to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal in a deal worth £46.3 million, but his future has quickly become uncertain once again.

Nunez was left out of Al Hilal’s squad for the second half of the season, fuelling speculation that his time in Saudi Arabia could be coming to an end.

Chelsea have emerged as a potential destination for the 26-year-old, with the club set for an active summer transfer window under new manager Xabi Alonso.

Desailly, speaking to Betway, was clear in his belief that Chelsea represents the ideal environment for Nunez to finally unlock his full potential as a striker.

“A player who could suit the profile is former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez,” Desailly told Betway, identifying him as a strong match for what the club needs.

Desailly suggested that Nunez’s struggles at Liverpool stemmed from the quality around him rather than any significant deficiency in his own ability.

“If you give him the confidence and belief, he will not feel shy because the people in the system are a higher grade than him,” Desailly explained in his assessment.

“That is what happened to him at Liverpool. There were too many players higher grade than him, so he couldn’t express himself,” the former Blues star continued.

Desailly was firm in his conviction that a move to west London would see a very different version of the striker on display for supporters.

“At Chelsea, I’m sure he would express himself and perform,” he added, making the case for the club to pursue Nunez as a genuine priority target.

The former defender did acknowledge some uncertainty around the striker search, noting Chelsea’s need to find someone matching a specific profile.

“They need a striker but I’m not sure exactly who it will be or where they will get him,” Desailly said, leaving the door open to other possibilities.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are set to bolster their attacking options regardless, with 19-year-old Sporting Lisbon forward Geovany Quenda officially joining the club this summer after a £40 million deal was agreed last year.
