Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has revealed that he intentionally missed club games this season to ensure he was fit and ready for the World Cup 2026.
The Brazilian shot-stopper made the admission while discussing his physical condition ahead of Brazil’s tournament opener against Morocco on Saturday.
Speaking to Estadao, as quoted and translated by Sport Witness, Alisson insisted he is in perfect health ahead of the competition.
“I’m 100%. Missing games for Liverpool was part of the plan to make sure I was ready for the World Cup,” he said.
The statement will likely raise eyebrows among Liverpool supporters, suggesting the goalkeeper prioritised international duty over his club commitments during what was a disappointing season at Anfield.
Liverpool did have a backup option available in Giorgi Mamardashvili, which softened the immediate impact of Alisson’s absences on the team.
However, the revelation does little to help the narrative around the atmosphere and professionalism within the squad during what proved to be a difficult campaign for the club.
Alisson is part of Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad for the tournament, as the five-time world champions look to end their long wait for international glory.
The goalkeeper is clearly motivated by the prospect that this tournament could represent his final chance to win the game’s most prestigious prize.
“My focus is on this World Cup. I will face it as if it were the last opportunity. I have learned this in life, to live each day. My focus is on this time. It is a huge opportunity to live another World Cup,” he said.
Alisson also reflected on the personal milestone of appearing at a third World Cup, placing himself among an elite group of goalkeepers to achieve the feat.
“I feel honoured to reach this mark of goalkeepers who were in three World Cups,” he added, highlighting the significance of the occasion for him personally.
The veteran goalkeeper made clear that his ultimate ambition goes beyond individual recognition, with the team trophy firmly his primary goal throughout the tournament.
“I want to enter the other group. I want to be among the World Cup champions. With the other 25 called-up players. That is my focus and the most important thing at the moment,” he concluded.
