Marc Cucurella Shuts Down Barcelona And Atletico Madrid Transfer Talk Ahead Of World Cup

Marc Cucurella has made his position clear on the transfer speculation surrounding him, insisting he wants no distractions while representing Spain at the World Cup.

The Chelsea left-back has been linked with a return to Spain, with both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid credited with interest in the 27-year-old defender.

TalkSPORT reported that Atletico Madrid were among those looking to open talks over signing Cucurella, making them perhaps the most active suitor in recent weeks.

However, Cucurella has made it abundantly clear he is not in the right headspace to be discussing potential moves away from Stamford Bridge at this moment in time.

Speaking to Partidazo de Cope, as translated by Fabrizio Romano, Cucurella said: “I am happy where I am. I told my camp not to tell me anything now, I don’t wanna know anything.”

When pressed specifically on whether he would prefer a move to Barcelona or Atletico Madrid, Cucurella was equally dismissive and blunt in his response.

“Barcelona or Atletico? Next question!” he said, leaving little room for any further discussion on the matter during the interview.

Chelsea supporters will have mixed feelings about their defender’s situation, given that Cucurella has shown himself to be a top-level player on his best days.

Consistency has occasionally been a question mark throughout his time in West London, and his public comments about the club’s direction have raised some eyebrows among fans.

After Chelsea’s Champions League defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in March, Cucurella told the Athletic: “I understand this is part of the club’s policy, and that they want to take this direction — signing young players and looking to the future.”

He continued: “But, for all of us who are still here and want to win big things, moments like this make you feel discouraged,” highlighting his frustration with Chelsea’s current trajectory.

Those words painted a picture of a player who feels somewhat disillusioned with the project at Stamford Bridge, even if he is reluctant to address his future publicly right now.

Chelsea’s failure to qualify for European competition after finishing 10th in the Premier League adds another complicating layer to the situation surrounding Cucurella’s long-term future.

For a player of his quality and ambition, the prospect of spending another season without European football may ultimately prove difficult to accept when the summer transfer window progresses.

If Barcelona or Atletico Madrid submit formal offers, it could become a situation that benefits all parties involved, with Chelsea potentially open to cashing in on the experienced defender.
