Kieran Trippier Weighs Contract Cancellation After Wolves Sack Rob Edwards

Kieran Trippier is seriously considering cancelling his contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers after the club dismissed manager Rob Edwards on Thursday.

The veteran right-back is reportedly furious at the decision and feels betrayed by the Molineux hierarchy following the sudden sacking.

Trippier had only agreed to join Wolves days earlier, with Edwards identified as the defining factor in convincing him to make the move to the Championship club.

The 35-year-old defender cut short a holiday in Turkey earlier this week to undergo a medical and sign a pre-contract agreement with the club.

His official two-year deal was set to begin on July 1, coinciding with the expiry of his existing contract at Newcastle United.

Edwards, 43, had viewed the former England international as a foundational pillar for the dressing room as Wolves prepare for life in the Championship following their relegation from the top flight.

Trippier had reportedly turned down multiple Premier League offers as well as lucrative interest from Saudi Arabia, choosing instead to commit to Edwards’ long-term project at Molineux.

The experienced defender previously made a transformative move to Newcastle in 2022, where his arrival is widely credited with helping spark the club’s modern resurgence under Eddie Howe.

Edwards had hoped Trippier would deliver a similar cultural and leadership impact at Wolves, bringing his vast experience to a squad facing a difficult season in the second tier.

Following the manager’s sudden dismissal, several senior players have also reached out directly to Edwards to express their dismay at the decision made by the Wolves hierarchy.

Wolves have moved swiftly to address the managerial vacancy, with the club reportedly close to finalising the appointment of Portuguese manager César Peixoto as Edwards’ successor.

Peixoto, 46, is highly regarded after guiding Gil Vicente to an impressive sixth-place finish in the Primeira Liga last season.

Wolves also secured the return of Mexico striker Raul Jimenez this week, who scored in a World Cup victory over South Africa on Thursday night.

The hierarchy’s swift appointment of a new manager indicates confidence in moving forward, but the potential loss of Trippier threatens to significantly disrupt the club’s summer rebuild ahead of a pivotal Championship campaign.
