Chelsea have been advised to prioritise the sale of Alejandro Garnacho as incoming manager Xabi Alonso begins his squad overhaul at Stamford Bridge this summer.
The Argentine winger arrived from Manchester United in a £40 million deal last August after falling out of favour under Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.
Garnacho, 21, endured a difficult debut campaign in west London, contributing eight goals and four assists across all competitions during his first season.
However, his Premier League record of just one goal in 24 appearances represents a deeply underwhelming return for a player who cost the club a significant fee.
He also managed only one goal in nine Champions League outings, with those numbers doing little to strengthen his case ahead of Alonso’s arrival.
Chelsea finished a disappointing tenth in the Premier League last season, and Alonso will be eager to reshape the squad considerably before the new campaign begins.
Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy has weighed in on the debate, suggesting Garnacho would be the more logical departure over fellow forward Liam Delap.
Murphy told the Metro on behalf of NetBet football: “I think Alejandro Garnacho has struggled, and the fans haven’t taken to him.”
He added: “If one was going to leave, I think it would more likely be Garnacho than Liam Delap.”
Murphy was quick to point out the complications involved in any potential exit, noting the realities of the modern transfer market for high-earning players.
“The other thing is that there might not be other clubs who want to take them with the wages they are on or pay the fee for them,” he said.
Murphy also stressed that Alonso should still give all players a fair opportunity before making any firm decisions on their futures at the club.
“I think any manager coming in has to give players a chance so I think he’ll want to look at them and see what they’ve got,” he said.
Garnacho is contracted at Stamford Bridge until 2032, which both complicates and potentially protects his position under the new Chelsea head coach.
Any sale would see Manchester United entitled to ten per cent of any profit Chelsea make on the winger, adding further financial complexity to a potential deal.
Murphy was complimentary toward Delap, suggesting the young striker offers qualities that set him apart from other Chelsea forwards currently at the club.
“Delap is a young lad, and he brings some characteristics that Chelsea don’t have. He’s different to Joao Pedro so I think Xabi Alonso will give him a crack,” Murphy said.
Joao Pedro was highlighted by Murphy as the one Chelsea wide or attacking player to have genuinely impressed during a largely forgettable season for the club.
With Alonso now at the helm, the summer transfer window will be a defining period in shaping what direction Chelsea take heading into the 2026/27 season.
