Marcos Senesi has been named in Argentina’s World Cup squad just one day after completing his free transfer move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs confirmed the signing of the defender on Wednesday, with Senesi arriving after his contract at Bournemouth reached its conclusion this summer.
The call-up represents a potential blow to head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who will now be forced to wait before working with his new signing in pre-season training.
Senesi’s availability ahead of the new Premier League campaign will depend entirely on how Argentina progress through the World Cup tournament.
Argentina have been drawn in Group J alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan, with the South American giants kicking off their campaign against Algeria in Kansas City on Tuesday night.
The call-up for Senesi came about after Marseille defender Leonardo Balerdi was forced to withdraw from the Argentina squad through injury.
Argentina confirmed in an official statement: “Defender Leonardo Balerdi suffered a muscle injury in the soleus of his right leg and will not be able to be part of the squad that will play the World Cup.”
The statement also included a message of support, reading: “Hang in there, stay strong, and get well soon.”
Senesi will now be part of Lionel Scaloni’s squad as Argentina attempt to defend the World Cup crown they won previously, with the pressure on every selection to perform.
At Tottenham, Senesi will be joining up with fellow Argentine Cristian Romero, who has also been included in the national squad for this summer’s tournament.
De Zerbi is overseeing a significant rebuild at Spurs following the club’s difficult 17th-place Premier League finish last season, making pre-season preparation all the more important.
Senesi spoke warmly about his move to north London, telling the club’s official website: “It’s a very special feeling to be a Tottenham Hotspur player.”
He added: “From the first moment, the club has shown why they want me and how much they want me to be a part of what they are building. It’s exciting and something I can’t wait to be involved in.”
The defender was also clear about his personal ambitions at the club, saying: “Every time I step on the pitch, I will do my best to make the fans proud and to take the club back to the place it belongs. I want to win things with Tottenham and will do everything I can to make that happen.”
