Tottenham Confirm Marcos Senesi Signing In Free Transfer As Roberto De Zerbi Reshapes Defence

Tottenham have officially confirmed the signing of defender Marcos Senesi, who joins the club on a free transfer after leaving Bournemouth.

The Argentine centre-back’s contract at the Vitality Stadium had expired, making him available without a transfer fee in a shrewd piece of business.

Senesi becomes the second free transfer arrival under head coach Roberto De Zerbi this summer, following the earlier signing of Andy Robertson.

The 29-year-old will wear the No.5 shirt at Spurs, a number left vacant since Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s departure from the club.

Senesi wore the same number during his time at Bournemouth, providing a sense of familiarity as he begins a new chapter in north London.

Speaking on the move, Senesi said: “It’s a very special feeling to be a Tottenham Hotspur player.”

He added: “From the first moment, the club has shown why they want me and how much they want me to be a part of what they are building.”

Senesi was also clear about his ambitions, saying: “Every time I step on the pitch, I will do my best to make the fans proud and to take the club back to the place it belongs.”

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi offered an enthusiastic endorsement of the signing, highlighting the defender’s suitability for his system and philosophy.

De Zerbi said: “Marcos’ experience, quality on the ball, and competitive edge will strengthen us defensively, as well as giving us flexibility in formation.”

The Italian coach continued: “He’s comfortable playing in a possession-based team, reads the game very well and has the personality to thrive in a demanding environment.”

Sporting director Johan Lange also weighed in, saying: “Marcos is a defender who brings a combination of quality, intelligence and leadership to our squad.”

Lange added: “His experience at the highest level, his composure in possession and his desire to compete for every ball make him an excellent fit for the way we want to play.”

Senesi had a standout 2025/26 season at Bournemouth, stepping up significantly following the departures of Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi from the club.

He now boasts over 100 Premier League appearances, adding considerable top-flight experience to a Tottenham squad being rebuilt under De Zerbi.

Away from club football, Senesi is also hoping for a late call-up to the Argentina squad for the World Cup following an injury to Leonardo Balerdi.

He is reportedly one of three players being considered to replace the Marseille centre-back in the national squad setup.
