Barcelona Decline €30m Option As Marcus Rashford’s Future Hangs In The Balance

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Barcelona will not trigger their €30 million buy option clause for Marcus Rashford, with the deadline expiring in just five days.

The transfer journalist posted the breaking update on X, throwing the England international’s future into serious doubt ahead of the summer transfer window.

Rashford has spent the past season on loan at Barcelona, experiencing a change of environment after a difficult period at Manchester United under previous managers Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.

Despite the option clause remaining available to them, Barcelona have decided against making the move permanent at that price, although they are open to alternative arrangements.

“BREAKING: Barcelona will NOT pay €30m buy option clause for Marcus Rashford, expiring in 5 days,” Romano posted on X.

“Rashford formally set to return to Man United but Barça remain open to new solutions, like another loan deal. Barça are open to discuss again if #MUFC open doors.”

The 28-year-old is currently with Thomas Tuchel’s England squad as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup, meaning any transfer negotiations will unfold against a major international tournament backdrop.

Barcelona’s continued openness to a cheaper deal or another loan arrangement suggests they still value Rashford, but are unwilling to meet Manchester United’s original asking price.

PSG and AC Milan have also previously been credited with admiration for Rashford, meaning those clubs could now emerge as serious contenders to secure his signature this summer.

There is also the possibility that new Manchester United manager Michael Carrick could look to reintegrate Rashford into his plans, given the pair were briefly teammates during Carrick’s playing days and Rashford’s early first-team emergence.

Carrick’s tactical approach may suit Rashford’s strengths better than the methods employed by his predecessors, potentially opening the door to an unexpected return to Old Trafford.

However, reintegrating a player who appeared to benefit significantly from his loan stint at the Nou Camp carries its own risks for a United side looking to move forward.

How the situation develops over the next five days, before the buy option expires entirely, could prove decisive in determining where Rashford plays his football next season.
