Manchester City have opened talks over a new long-term contract for Joško Gvardiol, looking to secure the Croatian defender well into the next decade.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, City are negotiating a deal that would keep Gvardiol at the Etihad Stadium until 2030, with a club option also being discussed as part of the agreement.

Gvardiol’s current contract runs until 2028, but City are unwilling to let the situation drift with serious interest beginning to emerge from across Europe.

Bayern Munich have shown concrete interest in the defender, with Bavarian Football Works reporting the German champions are exploring options who can cover both centre-back and left-sided positions.

Barcelona have also been linked, with wider interest from Spain previously reported, making the need for City to act quickly all the more pressing.

Left-footed defenders who combine pace, physicality and experience at the highest level are exceptionally rare, and Gvardiol fits the modern defensive profile as well as almost anyone in Europe.

At 24 years old, the Croatian international is still far from reaching his ceiling, which is precisely why City are keen to tie him down now rather than risk a battle later.

His versatility is a significant part of his value, as he can operate as a centre-back, a left-back, or in a hybrid defensive role depending on the tactical demands of any given game.

That flexibility is exactly what managers at elite clubs prize most, and City clearly view him as a cornerstone of their defensive setup for the years ahead.

Despite the transfer noise surrounding him, City are said to feel positive about the prospects of reaching an agreement and keeping one of their most important players at the club.
