Atletico Madrid have publicly humiliated Real Madrid after Los Blancos had a £129million transfer bid for Julian Alvarez firmly rejected on Tuesday.
Real Madrid confirmed they had submitted an offer of 150 million euros for the Argentine forward, who has been at Atletico for the last two years.
Alvarez, 26, joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in an £82million deal and has since established himself as one of Europe’s most dangerous forwards.
In his time at the club, the former River Plate man has scored an impressive 49 goals across 106 matches, cementing his status as a key figure at the club.
Despite signing a six-year contract that includes a £431million release clause, speculation had grown that Alvarez could potentially depart this summer.
Barcelona and Arsenal have both been linked with the player, with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta understood to hold genuine interest in securing his signature.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez had previously promised supporters the arrival of a new ‘galactico’ this summer, and the bid for Alvarez appeared to be that move.
However, Atletico wasted no time in rejecting the offer and responded with a statement that pulled no punches, mocking their city rivals in extraordinary fashion.
Atletico retweeted Real Madrid’s official statement on X with five laughing face emojis before releasing their own statement, which read: “Official statement with our clarifications regarding the official statement from our neighbours @realmadrid: 1. They cut out the part of the Pope’s video where he said he was an Atleti fan too.”
The statement continued: “2. You must have confused education with gratitude, but to leave no doubt: we don’t thank you for anything. 3. We neither study nor consider any offer for Julian. 4. How could we not get along, when you make us laugh even more than @FCBarcelona_es does.”
Atletico then added a pointed postscript directed at Real Madrid’s incoming president, saying: “P.S. Taking advantage of the good relationship with your new president, let’s see if you stop ‘stealing’ players from our Academy. Thanks a lot, @realmadrid!”
The exchange marks one of the most publicly hostile transfer disputes between the two Madrid clubs in recent memory, with Atletico making their position abundantly clear.
Should Atletico ever soften their stance on Alvarez, it is anticipated they would demand a fee in excess of the £129million offer already tabled by Real Madrid.
That would make him the most expensive signing in Premier League history if Arsenal were ultimately able to complete a deal for the Argentine star.
