Aston Villa race against time and rivals to sign the Serie A top talent

Aston Villa are racing against time and rivals to sign the impressive top talent from the Italian top flight this summer.

Aston Villa’s transfer business might have to get creative when it comes to high-demand targets. Their current pursuit has not been able to be completed as planned following the stance of the player’s club despite an offer being made. Como’s Martin Baturina is the aforementioned player.

According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport via SportWitness.co.uk, an offer has been submitted.

“Unai Emery’s side have submitted their bid between £43.1-47.5 million. This was rejected by Como and this is very much in line with what they have done for other players.”

His contract situation

Martin Baturina just signed a contract with Como last summer, and his performances have impressed a number of elite sides in Europe. However, it would not be easy to lure him away considering Como’s historic success in qualifying for the Champions League next season.

His club is definitely in control of his future as his contract expires in 2030. Como have demanded £69.1 million from any potential suitors, including Aston Villa, for the Croatian winger.

The Lions are not the only ones keen on signing him. Bayern Munich and another unidentified Premier League side are also battling for his signature. Baturina made the cut in Croatia’s 2026 World Cup finals squad, meaning that his value could potentially rise after the tournament should he thrive in North America.

Villa would have to decide immediately whether to improve their offer now, as he could be worth a lot more in the next few years, or miss out on signing him completely. They should be ready with other targets with more affordable price tags unless they can sell one of their stars to the highest bidder before the World Cup begins.

How good is Martin Baturina?

The 23-year-old winger has been impressive in his first season in Italy. He featured in 34 games, scoring eight goals and providing four assists in all competitions.

Based on the data from FotMob, he is the kind of winger Unai Emery is looking for. Baturina is versatile and can feature as a central midfielder and the number 10 role besides his main position on the left wing.

His xG is 1.83, while his xA is 4.76. The former Dinamo Zagreb man’s successful pass percentage is 87.7%, whereas his successful cross percentage is 40.3%. His accurate long-ball percentage is 62.5%, which is as remarkable as his successful dribble percentage (51.1%). His duel-winning percentage is also impressive, reaching 49%.

His defensive contribution is quite satisfactory too, with 21 tackles, five interceptions, and two blocked shots. Baturina also made 86 ball recoveries last season.

The winger with 19 international caps has shown outstanding form during recent friendly games. His performances have earned positive reviews from his national team boss, Zlatko Dalić.
