Manchester United could sanction the sale of Harry Maguire this summer, even though the veteran centre-back only recently put pen to paper on a new deal.
According to Football Insider, United are open to considering offers for the 33-year-old defender, signalling a significant shift in thinking at Old Trafford.
Maguire signed a contract keeping him at the club until June 2027, with the option of a further year, according to United’s official website back in April.
ESPN had previously reported that Maguire was set to become a free agent at the end of last season before that extension was agreed.
The willingness to move him on despite the fresh terms reveals just how seriously United are taking their squad overhaul under Michael Carrick.
The club are actively trying to reshape their roster, lower the average age in key positions and create more flexibility in the transfer market going forward.
Maguire deserves considerable credit for the way he turned his United career around after a turbulent spell that once made his departure look almost inevitable.
He fought his way back into the team and re-established himself as a useful senior figure, bringing professionalism, aerial strength and leadership during a period when United needed stability.
However, the question is not simply whether Maguire is good enough, but whether he fits the next version of the club that Carrick is trying to build.
Carrick’s side are expected to play with greater control, higher intensity and improved ball progression from the back, which may lead United to target younger and quicker centre-backs.
Maguire also missed out on England’s 2026 World Cup squad despite a reasonably strong domestic season, raising further questions about where he stands at the very top level.
Letting him go would be a ruthless call, but United cannot afford to make decisions based on sentiment alone when the squad needs meaningful modernisation.
At 33, Maguire remains a capable defender, but he is not the long-term solution to United’s defensive needs as the rebuild gathers pace.
If a reasonable offer arrives this summer, all indications suggest United would give it serious consideration rather than automatically relying on the security of his contract.
